A number of international developments reflected the evolving geopolitical and humanitarian dynamics across various regions of the world.

African and Caribbean countries called for formal apologies and reparations from nations that benefited from the transatlantic slave trade during a conference in Accra, Ghana. The conference adopted a 19-point reparations plan that includes debt cancellation, the return of cultural heritage, and the establishment of a global reparations fund. These demands gained momentum after the United Nations General Assembly recognized transatlantic slavery as a crime against humanity. However, the United States and the United Kingdom continue to reject reparations, arguing that current institutions cannot be held accountable for actions committed in the past.

In Eastern Europe, Volodymyr Zelensky returned the Order of the White Eagle after Polish President Karol Nawrocki revoked the honor in response to Ukraine’s decision to name one of its military units after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The decision reignited historical debates surrounding allegations that the UPA was responsible for massacres of Polish civilians during World War II. Nevertheless, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining bilateral relations and addressing historical differences.

Meanwhile, in the English Channel, the Russian warship Admiral Grigorovich fired warning shots toward a British-flagged yacht on Tuesday after it was deemed to have approached a hazardous navigation route. The Russian and British Ministries of Defence stated that the action was taken to prevent a potential collision. No casualties or damage were reported.

In the Indo-Pacific region, Germany and the Philippines agreed to develop an aircraft maintenance facility at Clark International Airport during German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s visit to Manila. The project, led by Lufthansa Technik Philippines and scheduled to begin operations in 2028, is expected to create 1,200 jobs. Analysts believe that the investment in the former United States military base reflects the growing convergence of economic and security interests in the Indo-Pacific.

Meanwhile, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has claimed 232 lives and infected 896 people, including 75 healthcare workers, 17 of whom have died. The World Health Organization stated that many medical personnel were exposed before the outbreak was officially confirmed in mid-May. Cases have increased by 38 percent over the past week, while healthcare and sanitation infrastructure in affected areas are reportedly facing severe challenges. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain, for which no approved vaccine or treatment currently exists.

In East Asia, Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako arrived in Belgium following their official visit to the Netherlands and were welcomed at the airport by Princess Elisabeth. They then traveled to the Royal Castle of Ciergnon to continue their itinerary. This marked the first time Princess Elisabeth participated in welcoming foreign dignitaries. During their stay in Belgium, they are scheduled to attend state ceremonies in Brussels, a royal banquet, and visit a university that received Japanese support after World War I.

On the global stage, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a framework agreement with Iran aimed at ending the conflict during a meeting in Versailles with French President Emmanuel Macron following the G7 Summit. The agreement includes Iran’s commitment not to develop nuclear weapons and outlines plans for the lifting of U.S. sanctions. It also aims to restore oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the agreement remains preliminary and has not yet been finalized.
