International geopolitics grew increasingly volatile over the past week, marked by the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran and the active involvement of the United States (US) under President Donald Trump.

On 16 June 2025, Trump left the G7 Summit in Canada earlier than scheduled, citing rising tensions in the Middle East. French President Emmanuel Macron viewed the US move as a positive step that could open opportunities for a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.

However, hopes for a ceasefire remain far from realization. On 18 June 2025, Iran launched a hypersonic missile toward Tel Aviv in response to Trump’s demand for Tehran to surrender unconditionally. The missile—traveling at more than five times the speed of sound with advanced maneuverability—proved difficult for Israel’s Iron Dome system to detect.

Meanwhile, military tensions in South Asia also intensified. On 21 June 2025, Pakistan issued a statement on X recommending Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for mediating to halt its conflict with India. New Delhi, however, firmly rejected any third-party mediation—particularly on the Kashmir issue—and dismissed US involvement.

On the same day, the US launched military strikes on three of Iran’s main nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, which Trump claimed successfully disrupted much of Iran’s uranium enrichment operations. In an official address, Trump threatened further military action should Iran refuse to agree to a peace deal.

From Southeast Asia, on 19 June 2025, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto paid a state visit to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Konstantinovsky Palace in Saint Petersburg. The two leaders discussed potential bilateral cooperation in agriculture, space exploration, and defense.

Also in the region, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra faced calls to resign on 20 June 2025 following the leak of an informal conversation with Cambodia’s Senate President Hun Sen. Assisted by a translator, the two discussed the Thailand–Cambodia border dispute. However, Paetongtarn’s remarks about the Thai military sparked widespread domestic criticism.

In Indonesia’s domestic context, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), erupted on 17 June, disrupting international flights. The Indonesian government, through the Directorate General of Immigration, responded by granting emergency stay permits and waiving overstay fees for affected foreign nationals.
