A series of significant developments shaped the global landscape throughout the final week of July 2025. From natural disasters in East Asia and military tensions in Southeast Asia and the Middle East to strategic maneuvers in the Indo-Pacific, the week underscored both the complexity of international relations and the urgency of evolving humanitarian challenges.
On Wednesday, 30 July 2025, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering a 60-centimeter tsunami that reached Japan’s Pacific coastline. Japan’s National Fire and Disaster Management Agency evacuated more than two million residents to safer areas following the tsunami warnings. The waves also caused four whales to become stranded along Japan’s shoreline.
In Southeast Asia, the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia entered a new phase. After five days of armed clashes, both countries agreed to a ceasefire mediated by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. However, just two days after the announcement, the Thai military accused Cambodia of violating the agreement at three border points in Sisaket Province. The renewed tension has raised concerns over the potential for further escalation, posing risks to regional stability.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip continues to reshape global diplomacy. The German government has publicly voiced its disapproval of Israel’s actions. Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared that the situation in Gaza is no longer acceptable, while Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called for fundamental changes to the humanitarian conditions on the ground. Even so, Germany has not taken formal steps toward recognizing Palestine as a state. In contrast, Slovenia became the first EU country to officially impose an arms embargo on Israel, citing the EU’s inability to take a united stance due to internal divisions.
In the broader Middle East, tensions surged again between Israel and Lebanon. On 31 July, Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley killed four civilians. The strikes targeted Hezbollah-linked infrastructure allegedly used for weapons production and storage. The Israeli government stated that the operation formed part of its deterrence strategy following last year’s conflict.
The United States added to the week’s global pressures by imposing new sanctions on more than 115 individuals, entities, and vessels linked to Iran’s oil and petrochemical sectors. The measures, announced on 30 July, were sharply condemned by Tehran, which described the sanctions as an act of open hostility and a systematic attempt to cripple its economy.
Meanwhile, China and Russia strengthened their strategic partnership by conducting joint military exercises in the Sea of Japan. The three-day drills were followed by joint patrols in the Pacific waters. China’s Ministry of Defense stated that the cooperation aims to counterbalance U.S. power and deepen bilateral ties between Beijing and Moscow.
