7 Days, 7 Issues, 1 World: HI UNPAR International Summary | Edition 30 June – 6 July 2025

In the first week of July, the international arena was marked by significant developments across various regions. In East Asia, China began gradually lifting its ban on seafood imports from Japan’s Fukushima region, two years after tensions flared over concerns of radioactive contamination following the release of treated wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. According to an official report by China Daily, the Chinese government stated it would continue conducting periodic monitoring to ensure the safety of seafood products from the area.

In Southeast Asia, Thailand was thrust into political turmoil after the Constitutional Court suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on 1 July 2025. The decision followed the leak of a phone recording with a Cambodian leader discussing border issues, which sparked criticism over her remarks toward the Thai military. Two days later, Phumtham Wechayachai was appointed acting prime minister while concurrently serving as minister of interior in the interim cabinet.

From the Middle East, Iran announced the termination of its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 2 July 2025. The decision came in response to strikes by Israel and the United States on Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordo, Isfahan, and Natanz. The announcement was broadcast on Iranian state television after the bill was approved by the Guardian Council.

In Eastern Europe, the Russia–Ukraine conflict escalated sharply as Moscow launched a massive drone and missile attack on Kyiv, following Russia’s rejection of a ceasefire proposal from President Trump. Over eight hours, Russia deployed a total of 539 drones and 11 missiles across Ukrainian territory, causing severe damage to railway infrastructure, buildings, and civilian vehicles. At least 23 people were injured, including 14 who required hospitalization.

Turning to the United States, flash floods caused by heavy rainfall along the Guadalupe River in Texas on Friday, 4 July 2025, killed at least 32 people, including 14 children. Within just 45 minutes, rapidly rising water levels triggered widespread destruction. The U.S. National Weather Service declared a flash flood emergency for parts of Kerr County in southern Texas Hill Country.

On the global stage, the 2025 BRICS Summit held on 6–7 July in Rio de Janeiro discussed issues such as global governance reform, the use of local currencies in international trade, artificial intelligence, climate change, and global health. The summit notably took place without two prominent leaders—Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin—who respectively delegated Premier Li Qiang and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to represent them.

From Indonesia, 24 ambassadorial candidates underwent fit and proper tests conducted by Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) on 5–6 July 2025. Commission I Chair Utut Adianto noted that most of the candidates come from career diplomatic backgrounds. Among the 24 nominees is Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro—an alumnus of UNPAR International Relations, class of ’86—who has been nominated to serve as Indonesia’s Ambassador to the UN Office in Geneva, Switzerland.
