7 Days, 7 Issues, 1 World: HI UNPAR International Summary| Edition 8 – 15 March 2026

Recent developments in international politics and security indicate rising tensions across several regions, including the Middle East, East Asia, and Europe. These events reflect the complexity of interstate relations shaped by military conflict, defense policies, and ongoing diplomatic efforts amid an increasingly unstable geopolitical environment.

The escalation of conflict in the Middle East continues after airstrikes by the United States and Israel again targeted oil depots in Tehran and Karaj, Iran. The attacks triggered large explosions, fires, and thick smoke in several areas. The Iranian government stated that it is monitoring air quality as the strikes may release hazardous substances into the environment. The conflict, now entering its second week, began after an initial attack that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. So far, the attacks have reportedly killed around 1,332 Iranian civilians and injured thousands more.

Rising tensions have also prompted several countries to increase their military presence in the region. Australia and France deployed military assets to the Middle East following the escalation of the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran. Australia sent surveillance aircraft, air to air missiles, and dozens of military personnel to the United Arab Emirates to support defense efforts and protect its citizens in the region. Meanwhile, France dispatched a number of naval vessels to the Red Sea to protect allied ships and maintain the security of maritime routes. At the same time, the United States eased sanctions on the purchase of Russian oil as a temporary measure to address the global energy supply crisis. The policy, which is expected to affect around 100 million barrels of Russian oil until Saturday (11 April), drew criticism from several leaders in Europe and Canada who argued that it could benefit Russia. Meanwhile, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have pushed global oil prices to around 100 dollars per barrel.

In other regions, global security dynamics also show increasing military and political activity. Indonesia signed an agreement with India to purchase the BrahMos missile system as part of efforts to modernize its main defense equipment and strengthen national defense capabilities. According to the spokesperson of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, Rico Ricardo Sirait, the agreement is also expected to strengthen the strategic partnership between Indonesia and India in the defense sector and enhance Indonesia’s ability to safeguard its sovereignty. Previously in 2023, BrahMos Aerospace, a joint company owned by India and Russia, estimated that the agreement with Indonesia could reach a value of 200 to 350 million US dollars.

Meanwhile, North Korea launched more than ten ballistic missiles into the sea from an area near Pyongyang toward waters off the east coast. The launch occurred as the United States and South Korea conducted joint military exercises that Pyongyang has frequently criticized as preparations for aggression. North Korea has long developed various missile systems as part of its nuclear capability despite being under United Nations Security Council sanctions since 2006. Amid these tensions, the administration of Donald Trump has also attempted to reopen dialogue with North Korea and is considering the possibility of a meeting with Kim Jong Un.

In Europe, the European Union extended sanctions on individuals and entities considered to be supporting Russia in the war against Ukraine for another six months until 15 September after a temporary deadlock caused by vetoes from Hungary and Slovakia. Around 2,600 individuals and entities are subject to sanctions including travel restrictions, asset freezes, and bans on providing funds or economic resources. The EU also lifted sanctions on two individuals and removed five deceased persons from the list, while Hungary and Slovakia had previously requested that several Russian oligarchs be removed from the sanctions list.

Meanwhile in Iraq on Saturday (14 March), the US Embassy in Baghdad was targeted by a drone attack. The incident occurred after three members of the Iran backed armed group Kataeb Hezbollah were killed in a strike in Baghdad. This marked the second attack on the US Embassy since the escalation of the Middle East conflict following the US and Israeli strikes on Iran on Saturday (28 February). In addition, drones also targeted the Baghdad airport complex, which hosts US military bases and diplomatic facilities. The drones were intercepted, although one that fell triggered a fire outside the airport area.

In East Asia, on Thursday (12 March), a passenger train from the city of Dandong in China re entered Sinuiju in North Korea after the route had been suspended for six years following border closures during the COVID 19 pandemic in 2020. The service was announced a day earlier by China Railway and is expected to operate four times a week with a fare of 1.45 US dollars. However, Chinese tourists are still not allowed to enter North Korea for tourism purposes.
