This week, international dynamics continued to be marked by a range of global challenges, including domestic political crises, natural disasters, and geopolitical shifts that may affect global stability.
In the United States, more than 2,500 flights were cancelled over the weekend after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered a reduction in air traffic due to the ongoing government shutdown, which remains unresolved. The policy triggered major disruptions across several major airports, exacerbated by staffing shortages, and had broad repercussions for domestic economic activities reliant on air travel. The shutdown has also become a significant domestic obstacle ahead of the Thanksgiving travel season.
Still from the U.S., Zohran Mamdani made history as the first Muslim Mayor of New York City after winning the election on Tuesday (Nov. 4) with 44 percent of the vote, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo. During his transition period, Mamdani appointed an all-women leadership team, led by Elana Leopold as executive director.
Meanwhile, a natural disaster struck the Philippines as Typhoon Kalmaegi killed at least 241 people and triggered floods and landslides across various regions. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr declared a national state of emergency to accelerate rescue efforts, rehabilitation, and the distribution of emergency funds. The government is also preparing for Typhoon Uwan, which is expected to worsen the country’s extreme weather conditions.
Geopolitical tensions escalated once again in Eastern Europe, where Russia launched new airstrikes on Ukraine, targeting energy infrastructure and killing at least seven people. The attacks—carried out with drones and missiles—hit several gas facilities. State-owned energy company Naftogaz reported that in recent months, Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector have intensified, with gas facilities hit nine times in just two months. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes as a systematic attempt to weaken Ukrainians ahead of winter and called for international sanctions to also target Russia’s energy sector.
In Southeast Asia, Myanmar’s military destroyed nearly 150 buildings used as online scam centers along the Thai border. The complexes reportedly housed thousands of human trafficking victims forced to carry out investment scams worth billions of dollars annually. The operation marks a significant step by Myanmar authorities in cracking down on transnational cybercrime networks operating in border areas.
A political crisis also unfolded in Tanzania after a senior opposition figure from the CHADEMA party was arrested following waves of protests triggered by the re-election of incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The party and human rights activists accused security forces of killing more than a thousand people, claims the government denies, insisting the election was legitimate. Observers from the African Union indicated evidence of manipulation during the voting process, fueling prolonged political tensions in the country.
Meanwhile in the Middle East, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa made an official visit to the United States on Saturday (Nov. 8), a day after Washington removed his name from its terrorist watchlist. Sharaa, who overthrew the Bashar al-Assad regime late last year, is scheduled to meet U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday (Nov. 10). His visit follows his first address at the UN General Assembly in New York last September, marking Syria’s return to the global diplomatic stage.
