Hi, Kawan HI! The international community has once again witnessed a range of noteworthy developments, from growing tensions between countries to new responses to conflicts and crises.
NATO and the European Union condemned an alleged Russian drone attack on Leipzig Airport in Germany, which was viewed as a new form of escalation. Germany closed the Russian consulate and Russian cultural institutions, while Russia retaliated by closing the Goethe-Institut in three cities. The European Union is also discussing tighter sanctions and visa restrictions for Russian citizens. NATO and the EU remain committed to increasing pressure on Russia.
Amid the war in Ukraine, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine for the sake of humanity. Modi reaffirmed India’s support for peace efforts and an end to the conflict. Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that there would be no economic relief for Russia until the war ends.
Tensions have also escalated between Iran and the United States after Iran accused the United States of committing a war crime following a missile strike during a wedding party that killed four people, including two children. Iran subsequently launched missiles and drones at several U.S. targets in retaliation, while the United States denied targeting civilians.
In the area of economics and international cooperation, the Dutch central bank moved 86 tonnes of its gold reserves from the United States and Canada to London amid growing geopolitical tensions. The move was intended to make the gold more accessible for trading and easier to use in the event of a crisis.
Meanwhile, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on 1 September, attended by leaders from all 10 member states. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed several areas of cooperation in security, trade, connectivity, technology, and water resilience, while trade among SCO members approached US$1 trillion.
China also strengthened its ties with Egypt through Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Egypt, aimed at deepening economic and diplomatic relations between the two countries. Xi and President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi also called for greater cooperation in addressing unilateralism and building a fairer system of global governance.
Meanwhile, severe flooding in Nepal and Tibet has killed at least 1,280 people, while 5,624 people remain missing. The United Nations stated that access to affected areas remains extremely difficult due to damaged roads and bridges. More than 21,000 Nepalese security personnel, along with teams from India, China, and South Korea, continue search-and-rescue operations, including in hydropower tunnels.
