Global developments over the past week reflect complex dynamics, marked by efforts to reduce tensions in conflict and security issues, alongside strengthened cross-regional cooperation amid international uncertainty.
In the Middle East, a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran has drawn global attention as it may temporarily halt the conflict that has been ongoing since February 28, 2026. The ceasefire was announced by President Donald Trump after postponing an attack on Iran’s energy facilities. Israel, through Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, expressed support despite initial surprise at the decision. Meanwhile, the United Nations released preliminary findings from its investigation into an attack on UNIFIL peacekeepers in Lebanon that killed three Indonesian soldiers, identifying a Merkava tank projectile used by Israel as the cause of the incident.
Tensions in Lebanon have also escalated following reports of mass destruction of villages in the southern region by the Israeli military, which allegedly detonated residential homes to target Hezbollah infrastructure in populated areas. This measure was taken to establish a security zone up to the Litani River and to prevent residents from returning until conditions are deemed safe. However, human rights groups argue that such actions may violate the laws of war due to the widespread destruction of civilian settlements, leaving residents displaced and facing long-term displacement.
In Europe, the Russia–Ukraine conflict continues to escalate despite temporary ceasefire efforts. Both sides have accused each other of violating the Orthodox Easter ceasefire, which lasted less than 24 hours after being announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin for approximately 32 hours. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine would comply with the ceasefire but remain ready to respond to any violations. Ukraine reported thousands of violations, including attacks, shelling, and small-scale drone usage, while Russia also accused Ukraine of breaches, including drone strikes that injured civilians. Previous ceasefire attempts have been deemed ineffective as both parties continue to blame each other for violations.
At the same time, Russia has expressed readiness to resume gas supplies to the European Union, provided there is remaining capacity after fulfilling demand from alternative markets, which are reportedly growing. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted that demand from other markets is significant but emphasized that Europe can still access gas from various sources due to the availability of liquefied gas facilities in Europe and the Middle East, as well as flexible market mechanisms.
In Asia, China announced ten incentive measures for Taiwan following a visit by Kuomintang Chair Cheng Li-wun. These measures include easing tourism restrictions, allowing the broadcast of television content, and facilitating trade in food products, on the condition that Taiwan opposes independence. The Taiwanese government criticized the policy as a politically motivated unilateral concession, while the Kuomintang welcomed it as beneficial for the public. Meanwhile, the United States urged China to halt military pressure and engage in dialogue with all parties in Taiwan to reduce tensions, amid Beijing’s continued claim over the island.
At the global level, advancements in space technology have once again captured attention. Four astronauts from NASA’s Artemis II mission successfully returned to Earth after completing a nine-day journey orbiting the Moon, landing safely in the Pacific Ocean as scheduled. The Orion spacecraft re-entered the atmosphere at high speed and experienced a six-minute communication blackout due to extreme heat, but the landing proceeded smoothly with parachute assistance. The astronauts were subsequently evacuated to a recovery vessel and underwent medical examinations. The mission’s success paves the way for the next phase of the Artemis program, which aims to land humans on the Moon and establish a long-term presence.
On Thursday (April 9), ASEAN and Australia strengthened cooperation in counterterrorism and preventing violent extremism through the 5th ASEAN–Australia Counter-Terrorism Dialogue in Jakarta. Both sides emphasized the importance of sustained regional collaboration and supported the development of a new framework as a continuation of the 2018–2026 action plan. The forum also served as a platform to share information on emerging threats, review ongoing cooperation programs, and identify future collaboration opportunities.
