7 Days, 7 Issues, 1 World: HI UNPAR International Summary | Edition 13 – 19 July 2026

Various developments on the global stage once again drew attention this week. From diplomacy, security, and migration to environmental issues, here are seven international issues you need to know about, according to HI UNPAR.

On Monday (14/07), Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she would file criminal charges in the United States over the deaths of 17 Mexican citizens during immigration detention and operations. The decision came following the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during an immigration operation in Houston. Sheinbaum stated that diplomatic channels were no longer producing results. The move comes amid growing tensions between Mexico and the United States.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose new tariffs on Canada over wildfire smoke blanketing parts of the United States. Canada emphasized that it would continue cooperating on wildfire management and efforts to prevent the fires from spreading. The wildfires have burned nearly three million hectares of land and reduced air quality across several parts of the U.S. Experts say climate change has also contributed to worsening wildfire seasons in Canada.

In the Indo-Pacific region, New Zealand and India established a strategic partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Auckland. The cooperation covers defense, trade, and diplomacy. Both countries also reaffirmed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The visit marked the first visit by an Indian prime minister to New Zealand in 40 years.

Meanwhile, the security situation in Europe once again came under the spotlight. Belarus redirected migrant flows toward Latvia’s border, leading to an increase in illegal crossings. Latvia viewed the move as a form of political pressure against the European Union. Lithuania and Estonia sent personnel to assist with border security. Lithuania is also considering temporary border controls along its border with Latvia.

In the Balkans, a group of Israeli tourists was attacked by several young men in Budva, Montenegro, while being shouted at and accused of genocide in Gaza. The incident left several victims injured, including some who suffered a broken jaw or lost consciousness. Previously, Israeli tourists had also faced verbal harassment in the city of Plav. The incidents have raised concerns over the safety of Israeli tourists in Montenegro.

From the world of sports, England secured third place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating France 6–4. Bukayo Saka scored a hat-trick, while Kylian Mbappé netted two goals for France. Mbappé is now leading the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot. The match was the highest-scoring World Cup game since 1982.

In Southern Europe, wildfires in Almería, Spain, killed at least 13 people, including citizens of the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, and Spain. The fires burned approximately 7,000 hectares of land. Authorities stated that the blaze had been brought under control. The Spanish government is calling for stronger prevention efforts amid the growing impact of climate change.
