Hello HI friends, welcome back to “7 Days, 7 Issues, 1 World: UNPAR IR’s International Roundup.” A range of global challenges have once again dominated the headlines, from migration crises and armed conflicts to climate diplomacy, natural disasters, and cross-border crime that are worth examining together.
In Europe, a border crisis occurred in Ceuta, Spain’s territory in North Africa, after around 50,000 people entered from Morocco. 86 people were reported dead, most from drowning and being trampled in the crowd. Spain deployed its military to control the situation and reinforce the border. The incident has sparked renewed concern and debate over migration issues in Europe.
In Ethiopia, fighting has resumed in Tigray, marking one of the most serious violations of the 2022 peace agreement. The Tigray government and the federal government have accused each other of initiating the attacks. The conflict arose after relations between the two sides deteriorated and the peace agreement was not fully implemented.
Meanwhile, the issue of climate change has drawn attention at the Indonesia Net-Zero Summit (INZS) 2026 in Jakarta. FPCI founder Dino Patti Djalal urged Indonesia to strengthen its role in global climate diplomacy. He believes Indonesia needs to be more active in the G20 forum and COP 31. The government stated it is currently preparing its COP 31 agenda, including carbon trading cooperation and biodiversity protection.
In Southeast Asia, Malaysia has once again come into the spotlight after Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Myanmar has agreed to take back 5,000 Rohingya refugees from Malaysia. The agreement was reached through good relations between the two countries. Malaysia currently hosts around 126,000 UNHCR-registered Rohingya refugees. This step comes amid rising tensions between Rohingya refugees and local communities.
In Peru, a tourist plane carrying 13 people crashed while en route to the Nazca Lines site on Saturday (8/1), with all passengers reported dead. The victims consisted of seven Italian nationals, two Germans, two Spaniards, and two crew members. The plane took off from Pisco Airport before crashing shortly after becoming airborne. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by Peruvian aviation authorities.
Also in Peru, Keiko Fujimori was inaugurated as Peru’s first woman president elected through direct popular vote. In her speech, she stated the military would lead temporary security operations in high-crime areas. Fujimori’s inauguration was marked by protests in Lima involving more than 100 people, including families of victims of state violence.
In Japan, several countries offered condolences and assistance following a powerful earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture. Taiwan stated it was ready to send a rescue team if requested by Japan. The UN also expressed sympathy and readiness to provide support if needed. Brazil and Italy likewise extended solidarity to the affected Japanese communities.
