7 Days, 7 Issues, 1 World: HI UNPAR International Summary | Edition 29 June – 5 July 2026

Welcome back with HI UNPAR, HI Friends! The global political and security landscape has once again witnessed significant developments over the past week. HI UNPAR has compiled seven key international issues that reflect the evolving dynamics of interstate relations across different regions of the world.

In Europe, German prosecutors have indicted a Ukrainian national for alleged involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream gas pipeline explosions in the Baltic Sea. The suspect is believed to have led the operation that destroyed three of the four pipelines and damaged critical civilian energy infrastructure. Ukraine has denied any involvement in the incident, and no party has claimed responsibility to date. The case is considered likely to affect relations between Germany and Ukraine.

In the Middle East, the United States and Iran resumed indirect negotiations in Qatar, with Qatar and Pakistan serving as mediators, to discuss a permanent end to the conflict. Both sides agreed to continue the talks following the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The negotiations remain complicated by disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz and the situation in Lebanon. Meanwhile, maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has gradually resumed despite ongoing regional tensions.

Meanwhile, Australia and Vanuatu signed a new economic and security agreement that prohibits the establishment of foreign military bases in Vanuatu. The agreement strengthens cooperation in security, policing, maritime affairs, cybersecurity, intelligence, and infrastructure. It also reaffirms Vanuatu’s commitment to preventing the militarization of strategic infrastructure. The move is widely seen as part of Australia’s broader effort to limit China’s security influence in the Pacific region.

In the South Caucasus, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced a new support package for Armenia during her visit to Yerevan. The European Union pledged financial assistance, the removal of export tariffs, and support for visa liberalization. The assistance comes amid increasing economic pressure from Russia on Armenia. The EU also reaffirmed its support for the ongoing peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

In Indonesia, the separatist group the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) claimed responsibility for killing an American pilot and setting fire to a civilian aircraft in Yahukimo, Papua. Indonesian authorities confirmed that the aircraft had burned but have not yet verified either the cause of the fire or the pilot’s reported death. The group described the attack as a message related to the ongoing conflict in Papua. The aircraft was carrying seven passengers from Papua.

Ahead of the NATO Summit, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has continued efforts to secure the United States’ commitment to the alliance before the summit in Türkiye. U.S. President Donald Trump once again expressed dissatisfaction with several allies and called for greater loyalty. At the same time, NATO faces growing pressure to strengthen its military capabilities amid concerns over potential threats from Russia. These developments have increased tensions within relations between the United States and other NATO member states.

In the Indo-Pacific, the Chinese and Russian navies will conduct joint military exercises in the waters and airspace off China’s eastern coast from 7–13 July. The drills will include reconnaissance operations, air and missile defense, as well as surface strike exercises. The activities will be followed by joint maritime patrols in several areas of the Pacific Ocean. The Joint Sea exercises have been held regularly by the two countries since 2012.
