7 Days, 7 Issues, 1 World: HI UNPAR International Summary | Edition 4 – 10 Mei 2026

Global developments over the past week have reflected an increasingly complex international landscape, marked by rising geopolitical tensions, the strengthening of strategic alliances, and various nontraditional security challenges across different regions of the world.

In Europe, Spain began evacuating passengers from the MS Hondius cruise ship infected with Hantavirus near Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Spanish Health Minister Mónica García stated that all passengers remained asymptomatic and that the evacuation process was proceeding normally. Passengers are being repatriated according to their nationalities using charter flights, while several crew members will remain on board before the ship returns to the Netherlands. The operation is being conducted under strict security measures after three passengers were reported dead due to Hantavirus. The World Health Organization stated that the risk of wider transmission remains low, although authorities have still prepared isolation and quarantine facilities for passengers after evacuation.

Still in Europe, two dual British Chinese nationals were found guilty by a London court of spying on pro democracy activists in the United Kingdom on behalf of Chinese authorities. One of the defendants was a British immigration officer accused of abusing access to a government database to obtain information on foreign nationals. Prosecutors stated that the two men conducted surveillance operations against activists, including Nathan Law, between December 2023 and May 2024. The case has further strained relations between the United Kingdom and China, which have remained tense since the 2019 security crackdown in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, the British government reaffirmed its commitment to taking action against activities threatening national security.

In the Middle East, Iran and China strengthened diplomatic communication through a meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and China’s top diplomat Wang Yi in Beijing. The meeting focused on Iran United States negotiations amid tensions following the Iran Israel conflict. Iran emphasized that it would only accept a fair agreement, while China called for an end to hostilities, the continuation of negotiations, and the reopening of shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz. The meeting took place ahead of talks between United States President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, which are also expected to address the Iran issue.

At the same time, Saudi Arabia strengthened defense cooperation with Pakistan through the signing of the Strategic Military Defense Agreement. The agreement is viewed as an effort by Riyadh to reduce its dependence on United States protection amid growing tensions in the Middle East. The pact states that an attack on one country will be considered an attack on both and is believed to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s defense position through Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities. The cooperation has also been marked by the deployment of Pakistani military contingents to Saudi Arabia as part of the agreement’s initial implementation.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the Ukraine war was approaching its end after Victory Day celebrations in Moscow were held in a more limited format during a three day ceasefire. This year’s parade did not display heavy weapons for the first time in nearly two decades. In his speech, Putin praised Russian troops fighting in Ukraine and claimed they were confronting aggressive forces backed by NATO. His remarks came as the battlefield situation remained largely stagnant and Ukrainian forces continued resisting Russian offensives.

In Southeast Asia, ASEAN leaders adopted the Cebu Protocol to Amend the ASEAN Charter during the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, the Philippines, marking the first revision to the ASEAN Charter since it was signed in 2007. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. described the move as a major milestone in ASEAN reform while also supporting the full integration of Timor-Leste as the bloc’s 11th member. The protocol also reflects ASEAN’s efforts to strengthen political, economic, and sociocultural cooperation through the implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 amid challenges related to economic resilience, geopolitical stability, and regional security.

On the other hand, the Singaporean government has been working with Indonesian authorities to assist Singaporean citizens affected by the eruption of Mount Dukono in Halmahera, North Maluku. The eruption, which occurred on Friday morning, killed three hikers, including two Singaporeans, while affecting 20 people and leaving three others missing. Mount Dukono is currently at level two on Indonesia’s volcanic alert system, and the surrounding area has been closed to tourists since April 17 due to increased volcanic activity.
