From regional diplomacy in Southeast Asia to evolving security dynamics in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, this week’s international developments once again highlight the complexity of interstate relations amid a shifting global geopolitical landscape. HI UNPAR has compiled seven key issues that reflect these dynamics, ranging from strengthened bilateral cooperation and escalating armed conflicts to challenges in global health and public diplomacy.
Indonesia and Singapore concluded 26 cooperation agreements during the annual Leaders’ Retreat between President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in Jakarta. The agreements consist of 18 government-to-government initiatives and eight business-to-business partnerships across various sectors, including the economy, defense, education, energy, trade, the digital economy, and cybersecurity. Both countries stated that these achievements reflect the increasingly broad and close bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Singapore.
In the Middle East, rising tensions between the United States and Iran have created uncertainty over the memorandum of understanding reached in June. Qatar stated that the escalation has disrupted the implementation of the agreement, including maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Nevertheless, negotiations concerning the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear program, and sanctions remain ongoing. Qatar has once again urged all parties to exercise restraint in order to preserve the diplomatic process.
Meanwhile, Russia temporarily suspended shipping activities in the Sea of Azov after dozens of vessels were targeted by Ukrainian drone attacks over the past week. Ukraine claimed responsibility for strikes on a tanker, a ferry, an oil refinery, and an electrical substation in Crimea. The attacks disrupted one of Russia’s key logistical routes in the Sea of Azov. Ukraine stated that the operation was intended to weaken Russia’s logistical and military capabilities.
Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the construction of a national monument dedicated to the victims of the Volhynia massacre. Tusk once again urged Ukraine to officially acknowledge the tragedy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reaffirmed his commitment to uncovering the historical truth. Despite differences over the issue, both countries emphasized the importance of continued cooperation in the face of the Russian threat.
Elsewhere in the Middle East, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have destroyed two U.S. military facilities at Al Azraq Air Base in Jordan through ballistic missile strikes. Iran warned that it would target additional U.S. military bases if attacks against its territory continue. At the same time, Iran alleged that recent U.S. strikes had also hit civilian infrastructure.
In Africa, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that a U.S. citizen in the Democratic Republic of the Congo had been infected with the Bundibugyo virus, a species of the Ebola virus. Health authorities have begun contact tracing to prevent further transmission. The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has recorded 1,830 cases and 648 deaths. The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the risk of global spread remains low.
Meanwhile, in East Asia, Norwegian footballer Erling Haaland has become a social media phenomenon in China during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His Douyin account has attracted 5.8 million followers, significantly boosting his popularity among Chinese football fans. His growing influence has also led to partnerships with several Chinese companies. Many supporters regard Haaland as an authentic and approachable figure who maintains a close connection with his fans.
