In the second week of June 2026, several developments in global politics and security once again drew attention. Efforts to resolve conflicts, increased military readiness, and the strengthening of inter-state cooperation became the main issues emerging across various regions of the world.
In the Middle East, the United States and Iran are reportedly getting closer to reaching an agreement to end a conflict that has lasted for more than three months. Pakistan, as the main mediator, stated that a peace agreement could potentially be finalized within the next 24 hours, although Iran emphasized that no official signing schedule has been set. Both countries still have differing views regarding uranium enrichment and the management of the Strait of Hormuz. Despite ongoing tensions in the region, Washington and Tehran remain optimistic that an agreement can be reached soon.
In Latin America, US President Donald Trump announced that the US military had killed the leader of the Venezuelan criminal group Tren de Aragua, Héctor Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, also known as Niño Guerrero, in an airstrike in Venezuela. The operation was carried out jointly with Venezuelan authorities and targeted organized crime in Bolívar State. Tren de Aragua is a criminal organization operating in several Latin American countries and has been designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the Trump administration. Guerrero had long been known as the group’s main leader.
Meanwhile, tensions in East Asia increased as Taiwan strengthened its defense readiness. The Taiwanese military fired HIMARS rockets into the waters of the Taiwan Strait during military exercises simulating a possible invasion from China. This marked the first time the HIMARS system was used to fire rockets westward toward the strait separating Taiwan and China. The mobile rocket launcher system was used to test rapid deployment capabilities and precision strike tactics using a shoot-and-scoot method. The exercises took place on Taiwan’s western coast facing mainland China.
In Europe, European Union member states agreed to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova next week. This decision marks the official start of the process toward full EU membership for both countries. Ukraine views EU membership as a long-term security guarantee following its war with Russia. Despite receiving praise for reforms implemented during wartime, Ukraine still faces challenges related to corruption and judicial standards.
On another note, on Sunday (14 June), German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier began a five-day visit to Asia with a schedule covering Indonesia, the Philippines, and Uzbekistan. During the visit, Steinmeier is accompanied by his wife, Elke Büdenbender, and a German business delegation. In Indonesia, he is expected to highlight peaceful religious coexistence, while in the Philippines he is scheduled to visit Lufthansa production facilities and meet Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa. The visit will conclude in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where he will visit a branch of the German construction company GP Günter Papenburg.
In Western Europe, the United Kingdom intercepted the oil tanker Smyrtos, suspected of being part of Russia’s shadow fleet, in an operation in the English Channel on Sunday (14 June). The UK government stated that the fleet supports Russian oil exports that are subject to sanctions and helps finance the war in Ukraine. The Cameroon-flagged vessel is now anchored off the coast of Dorset for further monitoring.
Another development occurred in Australia–UK defense relations after a visit by Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles to the UK was disrupted when British Defense Secretary John Healey resigned just hours before a planned joint agenda at the AUKMIN forum. Healey’s resignation led to the cancellation of media events and scheduled interviews in Portsmouth. In his resignation letter, Healey cited insufficient defense funding as the main reason for his decision. Nevertheless, Marles emphasized that Australia–UK defense relations remain strong amid the political changes in the UK.
